Rain Delays
Friday already.
Somehow.
Jacob missed another game Wednesday night.
Mostly better.
Not fully there yet.
It was his call, and honestly, I agreed with it.
I thought the game was going to get canceled anyway.
The rain finally showed up.
Not much, but enough to smell it in the air and hear it against the windows.
After weeks and weeks of dry weather, we needed it badly.
We still need about fifteen inches just to climb out of drought conditions.
Between Wednesday and Thursday?
0.07 inches.
Better than nothing.
Yesterday turned into a full rain day.
And with it came another baseball disappointment.
David’s first unofficial game was called because of the weather.
I’m not upset about that.
Keeping the kids safe matters more than getting innings in.
Still…
This season has been rough.
So Dad mode kicked in.
Hamburgers.
Hotdogs.
Potato salad.
Potato chips.
Everything at home.
Then we settled in and watched Rookie of the Year together.
If baseball was getting rained out, we were still going to make the night about the game.
And honestly?
It worked.
Everyone relaxed.
Everyone laughed.
Everyone needed it.
Now it’s Friday afternoon.
Just need to make it through the day.
Jacob is almost back to full speed.
Asher is still working his way there.
I took the kids to school this morning to give my wife a little peace and quiet.
A little breathing room.
Tonight will probably be leftovers and cleanup.
Homework for the kids.
Housework for us.
My schoolwork is already done for the week.
Tomorrow starts early.
Very early.
We’ll be leaving around the same time we normally leave for school.
But instead of classrooms and work…
Violin recital reception.
Two and a half hours away.
Zoey’s moment to shine.
Or at least prepare to.
It was decided that once her recital is over next month, she’ll be moving up to a full-sized violin.
My violin.
She’s nervous.
I’m excited.
Then comes Mother’s Day.
Celebrating my wife.
Celebrating my mom.
Avoiding all the usual church jokes about dads dressing the kids.
And just doing what I do.
Trying, honestly and earnestly, to show love, admiration, and devotion to the people who deserve it.
Next week brings more change.
Diet shifts.
Workouts ramping up.
More baseball practice at home.
David and Zoey only have two weeks of school left.
Jacob and Asher are already done after testing.
Summer is starting to appear on the horizon.
Relaxation.
Travel.
A little freedom.
A little chaos.
But that’s for future me to enjoy.
And present me to work for.
Not every good memory comes from things going according to plan. Sometimes the games get canceled. Sometimes the rain wins. But there’s still something meaningful in the adjustment. Sitting together. Sharing a meal. Watching an old baseball movie while the storm rolls through outside. Life doesn’t stop being good just because it changes direction.
This is a grounded moment where even rain delays can become part of the memory.
Much love. Stay safe. Wash your damn hands. Call your mom this weekend. Buy your wife some flowers. I’ll see you Monday.
