Done and Dusted
It's 7:00 Wednesday night.
Dinner is finished.
The kitchen is clean.
Catch has been played.
The kids are settling into their evening.
My workday is done.
And I just realized...
I forgot to write the blog.
That probably tells you everything you need to know about today.
Work was work.
There are fires burning.
It's that season.
We'll put them out.
Or contain them.
Or stare sternly at them until Friday.
Whatever works.
I finished my school assignments late last night but decided to sleep on them before submitting.
Good decision.
Except apparently submitting schoolwork this morning instead of last night shifted my mental calendar approximately one day to the left.
So here we are.
David served his detention today.
Jacob used the extra waiting time in the parking lot to knock out homework.
There's probably some cosmic humor in one brother serving detention while the other becomes more productive because of it.
I'll take the win.
We're also working on getting Zoey started earlier.
She was a little late out of the gate today, but still finished before noon.
That included a full violin lesson delayed twenty minutes because her computer's audio cables apparently woke up and chose violence.
Technology.
My old friend.
Asher still occasionally fights starting school.
Then he starts.
And doesn't want to stop.
That kid's brain is something else.
Meanwhile, I only have two weeks left in these two classes.
That's difficult to believe.
I've enjoyed them.
They've made me think about things I haven't seriously considered in a long time, and in ways I didn't expect.
Now I just have to land the plane.
I also spent some time today cleaning up my work calendar.
Apparently Past Me thought Future Me would enjoy attending meetings during time I'd already planned to take off with my family.
Future Me disagrees.
Decline.
Move.
Delete.
Protect.
We have a camping trip coming soon.
The nights have gotten cold.
A couple of the kids and I will probably be perfectly happy.
The rest of the family may require approximately 14,000 blankets.
We'll pack accordingly.
But that's later.
Right now?
Two more workdays.
A few fires.
School.
Kids.
Homework.
Baseball.
Life.
Then the weekend.
It's 7:00.
Today is done and dusted.
And apparently...
The blog got written after all.
Some days don't leave much room for reflection until they're already over. Maybe that's okay. Not every day needs to produce some grand realization while we're standing in the middle of it. Sometimes you work, parent, teach, learn, cook, clean, throw a baseball, solve what you can, and suddenly look at the clock to discover the day disappeared while you were busy living it. There are two more workdays between me and the weekend, two more weeks between me and the end of these classes, and plenty waiting beyond both. For tonight, though, I'm calling today complete. Tomorrow can wait until tomorrow.
Much love.
Stay safe.
Wash your damn hands.
And I will see you, next time.
